Tourist Trap Tuesday: Portland

Oh heyyyy, remember me? I know, I know, it has been a little while since I’ve posted, but life happens, and sometimes you have to take a mental break… even when you don’t have posts in the queue. However, we’re back to business and I’ve had a bit of a love affair with the Pacific Northwest lately. I’ve been to Portland a few times and can’t wait to go back.

Tourist Trap Portland

The last time I was in Portland, it was for a whirlwind weekend of basketball when Long Beach State played New Mexico in the NCAA tournament. It was super fun, but I definitely did not get to enjoy the city as much as I would have liked. While I was there, I was also able to visit with some family friends and enjoy a quiet couple days in one of the local suburbs of Portland. The city has grown so much from the first time I was there and I really want to be able to explore it as an adult. Lucky for me, I might have a chance to visit later this year, thanks to Long Beach State playing the University of Oregon on the road.

Here’s a few places that have been recommended and that I’ve been wanting to try:

I love waffles and pancakes and crepes. A lot. I found this place on Instagram and can’t wait to eat here! They have sweet and savory items and everything they post looks amazing.

Pine State Biscuits

I am still on my biscuit kick, so hearing about another awesome biscuit place makes me really happy. Their menu looks awesome and I just really want to eat biscuits. I should just make them, buttttt going to a new city and eating them there sounds WAY better.

Do you know what I love more than sandwiches? Fancy sandwiches. Lardo started as a food cart in Portland, but became so famous they were able to open a full size location. Everything on their menu sounds amazing.

Pok Pok

Again, there’s now a Los Angeles location, but it’s not the same as the original and unless something changes drastically in my near future, I don’t see myself going to eat in Downtown Los Angeles soon! I’m always up for trying new food, and eating at Pok Pok would definitely do that. Traditionally Thai but kicked up a notch and everything I’ve ever heard about Pok Pok is amazing.

Coffee and Other Drinks

Multnomah Whisk{e}y Library

Um, yes. I love whiskey so much and this place is fancy and has really good cocktails and I need to go here because it probably has many leather bound books and smells of rich mahogany.

Stumptown Coffee

If you’re going to Portland, you have to go here, or at least drink some Stumptown. It’s so good, and I can’t wait to have more straight from the source.

Sweets and Treats

Salt & Straw Ice Cream

Yes, I know there’s a location closer to me in Larchmont. Realistically, there’s a better chance of me going to the original than the one that’s here in LA. I love their use of sweet and savory and who doesn’t love ice cream?

Blue Star Donuts

Alcohol infused donuts? Buttermilk old fashioned donuts? Yes, yes and more yes. Sure, Voodoo Donuts is wonderful, but sometimes, a more traditional take on donuts is needed.

What do you think? What places did I miss that I HAVE to visit next time I am in Portland? Let me know in the comments!

Breakfast in Portland is an event. Plan accordingly. I haven’t loved Pine State Biscuits as much since they’ve become so big, but the one at the Farmers Market is still good. Oh, you HAVE to go to the PSU farmers market. Lardo and Pok Pok are both delicious. And, of course, I have to recommend our friend’s coffee shop – Sterling. Deeee-licious! And adorable. I have yet to try Blue Star, but I understand it’s the best.

    • I really hope this trip pans out and I can go in Novemberish (or whenever the schedule allows). I love it up there and can’t wait to actually explore the city. How funny that you recommend that coffee shop. My good friends have Sterling as their last name. It’s meant to happen, I know it.
